LEXINGTON, Ky. – Family members of 565 fallen Kentucky soldiers will see their loved ones honored at UK’s Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, Jan. 14 when the women’s basketball team takes on Ole Miss.
Since its completion in 1950, Memorial Coliseum has borne the names of thousands of Kentucky’s war dead. But the lists of names – framed and hung on the walls of the ramps along two sides of the coliseum – have not been updated since the end of the Vietnam War.
Over the last 30 years, 565 Kentuckians have made the ultimate sacrifice in service in the U.S. Armed Forces.
On Sunday their names will join those of their predecessors in a ceremony during halftime of the Ole Miss game.
UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart is eager for the update so that the building can continue to honor the sacrifices made by so many Kentuckians who have served in the military.
“We represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” Barnhart said, “We always have and we always will, and for that reason we feel that it’s absolutely imperative that we give tribute to those folks who have represented the Commonwealth and we can do it in a place that means so much to so many people.”
UK would like to see family members of every fallen soldier at the ceremony, but needs help locating them, because military records are private.
To receive complimentary tickets to the game and more information about the event, family members of fallen soldiers should call or email Leslie Bray in UK Athletics at leslie.bray@uky.edu, (859) 257-2589. Those with questions about the 565 fallen soldiers who will be honored should call or email John Kramer with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs at JohnWKramer@ky.gov, 1-888-724-7683.
