LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The Kentucky sprinters continued to show improvement Saturday as they closed out the two-day intrasquad sprint preview at Nutter Field House.
The men?s 4×400 meter relay team of Kwasi Obeng, Nate Browning, Geoffrey Daley and Jose Acevedo finished first with a time of 3:12.90, defeating the team of Justin Harrison, Luis Luna, Mikel Thomas and Clark Williams that finished with a 3:14.54. The winning squad showed great improvement from last season as the winning time a year ago was 3:13.50.
Gordon McKenzie, a member of the U.S. Junior National team this past summer, finished first in the 150 meter dash with a 15.98 clip, while Brandon Austin was second with a 16.40.
In the women?s 400 meter, Jenna Martin finished first with a time of 54.78, while Ashley Trimble followed with a 58.84 and Kleo Mack with a 59.84.
?I am really excited about how these kids came out and competed over the last two days,? said Erin Tucker, assistant coach for Sprints. ?This will definitely give them more motivation headed into the Christmas break and beyond. This group is even hungrier than last year.
?I believe these kids feel they have some unfinished business to take care of this year. Last year was a productive year, but we all know the best is yet to come. My first year kids truly earned their keep, but they had a great group to watch and learn from.?
Kentucky begins its 2007 Track and Field regular-season slate when it plays host to the annual Kentucky Invitational Jan. 12-13 in the Nutter Field House.
