University of Kentucky volleyball player Kathleen Bowler has been named to the Southeastern Conference Good Works Team, it was announced today. The SEC sponsors Good Works Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.

Bowler, a junior defensive specialist, has worked as a teacher?s assistant for third grade science experiments as part of Johnson Elementary School?s Mentoring program in Lexington. She has worked at the St. Vincent Care Shelter, organizing canned goods and other household necessities for a food drive, in addition to cleaning the warehouse and painting the walls.

Bowler has also volunteered at Special Olympics Bowling and at the UK Children?s Hospital. She has served as a bell-ringer during the Salvation Army?s Red Kettle Campaign and worked with the UK Athletics Food Drive. The Naperville, Ill., native taught volleyball to gym classes at Cary Grove High School and participated in National Walk Kids to School day. Bowler has also volunteered at God?s Pantry in Lexington and worked as an instructor at several Girl Scout volleyball clinics.

Bowler and the Wildcats return to action when they open play in the 2006 NCAA Tournament Thursday, Nov. 30, at 4:30 p.m. in West Lafayette, Ind. UK faces No. 20 Ohio in the opening round at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility.
