Kentucky golfer Andy Winings finished tied for seventh at the 32nd Annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic at El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas.
The sophomore fired back-to-back rounds of 68 after shooting an opening-round 71 and finished with a six-under par total of 207. Winings was 12 strokes behind Georgia?s Chris Kirk who won the title after he set a 54-hole tournament record with a three-round total of 195, eclipsing the record set by Arizona?s Ricky Barnes in 2000 and later matched By Arizona?s Chris Nallen in 2003.
The 2006 Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic marks the 32nd year of the event. Over the years, many Golf Classic competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional Golfers? Association of America and on the PGA Tour.
Prior to the 54-hole tournament, players competed in long drive and putting contests. Winings bombed a pair of shots far down the fairway, before he won the contest on his final try ? a 337 yard shot down the first fairway to beat Coastal Carolina?s Dustin Anderson by two yards. In all, 16 of the 28 golfers went 300 yards or better. Six other golfers got the better of the 300-yard mark, but missed the fairway and were disqualified.
?Andy’s game is really maturing and becoming very consistent, said Kentucky head coach Brian Craig. ?This was a solid performance against an elite field of college players and should only enhance his confidence as we head into the spring season in a few months.?
Winings and the Wildcats return to action Feb. 10-11 when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., for the Gator Invitational.
