LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 21/24 Kentucky will meet Old Dominion Saturday for the first time since 1987 when the two storied programs square off in the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. EST and the game will be carried live on Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic (television) and the Big Blue Sports Network (radio). Due to Kentucky?s home football game vs. Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at 1 p.m. EST, the women?s basketball game will be carried on WXRA 1580 AM. WLAP 630 AM will pick up the women?s game in progress as soon as the football game ends. The football post-game will air on 98.1 WBUL.
Kentucky is 1-1 to start the season after finishing as runners-up in the fifth annual Women?s Sports Foundation Tournament in Memorial Coliseum last weekend. The host Wildcats defeated Washington State in the first round, 81-50, before falling, 54-51, to border rival Indiana in the championship game. Senior Jennifer Humphrey (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior Samantha Mahoney (Detroit) were named to the all-tournament team.
Humphrey leads the Cats, averaging 11.5 points per game, while sophomore point guard Carly Ormerod (Louisville, Ky.) follows with 10.5 ppg. Humphrey and junior center Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.) lead the boards with 10.0 rebounds per game apiece.
?Old Dominion is traditionally a very strong team,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?It will be a test for us on the road. They have some big bodies and they?ll pose some problems for us offensively. They?ll play a variety of defenses and we?ll have to be ready for physical play.?
Kentucky and Old Dominion meet for the 10th time in school history with the Lady Monarchs holding a 7-2 advantage in the all-time series. After the first meeting in 1979, the two teams played annually from 1982 to 1987. Both teams were considered two of the premier programs in the country during the early 1980s, battling for national rankings and the attendance title every year.
The Lady Monarchs are coming off a 92-72 loss at Virginia on Sunday. Old Dominion returns four starters and nine letter winners from a team that went 22-9 and captured its 15th consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title last season. Junior guard T.J. Jordan led the team in scoring last year with 13.4 ppg and scored a team-high 21 points in this season?s opener against Virginia.
