Women's Basketball

Head Coach Mickie DeMoss

?We?ve had a really good week of practice so for. I think the Indiana loss really helped us, particularly offensively with some things we have to get better at. We?ve had a good week of practice. Old Dominion is traditionally a very strong team. They?re one of the few smaller schools that every year knock off ranked teams, big conference schools. This year, they?re no different. They are very athletic. They have a coach (Wendy Larry) who has taken a team to the Final Four. They?re just a real athletic, confident team. They draw (crowds) well there. It will be a test for us on the road. I knew that when we scheduled the game. It will certainly be a challenge for us.?

On working on offense during practice?

?We have spent a lot of time on offense this week. After looking at the tape, we got good looks and had some shots that we normally knock down. When you play a game, and you?re competing, sometimes nerves and trying too hard is all a part of it and we never could shake out of that tightness in the second half.?

On what a win would mean to Old Dominion?

?It?d be a great win for them; it?d be a great win for us. Old Dominion is a unique kind of school, particularly the size of their school. (Head Coach) Wendy Larry does not shy away from playing anybody. She opened up on the road at Virginia. Their pre-conference schedule is always tough.?

On memories from playing Old Dominion while coaching at Tennessee?

?We played them every year. Probably beating them in the national championship game (was my best memory). The year we struggled (1996-97 season), we beat them in the national championship game, when they had Ticha Penicheiro. She was the point guard, and they had a really good team.

On how the physicality of Old Dominion compares to Indiana?

?I would say they are as physical (as Indiana), especially inside. They have some big bodies they can throw at you. They?re athletic as well. They?ll pose some problems for us offensively. They?ll play a variety of defenses and throw some different looks at us. We?ll have to be ready for physical play and a lot of athleticism as well.?

On Kentucky and Old Dominion renewing their rivalry?

?That?s one of the reasons why we put them back on the schedule. Our fans have been very loyal to us and very loyal to me since I got here. A lot of them talk about how we set an attendance record when Old Dominion was ranked. I thought it would be interesting to get them back on the schedule. They?ll come to Lexington next year.?

Kentucky Players

On the challenging practices since the loss?

?Obviously we need to improve individually and as a team. We really just need to change our mindset.?

On the mood in the locker room this week?

?Everyone is down on losing the second game of the season, but we will get through it and be fine. Our practices have been going really well and I can see the improvements already.?

On players stepping up?

?I think that we all have to step up and that is what we are working on. The Indiana game has only made us stronger.?

Sarah Elliott #4

On Indiana?s celebration?

?Seeing them celebrate like that did upset me. I really tried not to look. All I wanted to do was get in the locker room and get back to practice to forget that game.?

On the practices since the loss?

?Practice has been very physical and tough. We have just been working hard and looking forward to the next game. Now we know we have to come out and play our best every game, because we are the target now.?

On the attitude to get back on the court?

?It has been a very long week. I really want to apply the corrections I have made. The whole team is fired up to get back into action.?
