LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Led by the crafty arm of junior Greg Dombrowski, the Black squad defeated the Blue 2-0 in game five of the Kentucky baseball Fall World Series, Thursday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium to narrow the Blue series lead to 3-2.
Dombrowski got the start and kept the Blue off balance during his three innings of work, handing the ball over the Brock Baber in the fourth with a perfect game. In his three innings, Dombrowski faced nine batters, striking out four and forcing five ground-ball outs, earning the win.
The Black got the early advantage, when Jason Kipnis led off the game with a bunt single. Anthony Ottrando drove in Kipnis with an RBI single to give the Black a 1-0 lead.
The Black got on the board again in the third, beginning with a Marcus Nidiffer double. Lexington product Chris Wade laid down a sacrifice bunt and Nidiffer hustled around the score, narrowly beating out an exciting play at the plate.
Baber finished the six-inning contest off, hurling the last three innings and allowing only one Blue hit to earn the save. Freshman James Paxton, a crafty southpaw, allowed two runs on three hits to earn the loss for the Blue.
The game was the second of the afternoon, as the team finished up game four which was suspended in the fourth inning Tuesday. The Blue stretched its series lead to 3-1 with a 5-2 win, behind the pitching of Duran Ferguson, who earned the save.
The series will resume Friday at 3 p.m., with the Blue seeking to clinch the series with a 3-2 lead.
