SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. ? The University of Kentucky women?s golf team used a fantastic third round to push into the top-10, placing ninth, to conclude round three of the Ross Resorts Invitational at the Pine Needles Course Tuesday. Today?s round also concludes the fall slate for the Wildcats.
The Blue and White carded the fourth best final round on the day (306), as only Rollins, Princeton and Xavier had better team scores than the Cats. Rollins and Princeton finished first and second for the tournament respectively.
Trailing Richmond by three strokes heading into today?s final round, Kentucky?s four golfers all shot 80 or below to finish ninth. Senior Katie Johnson led the Wildcats with a stellar final round two-over-par 73. It was Johnson?s best round of the fall season, and the first time this season the Lexington native led the team in scoring. Johnson finished tied for 22nd with a three-round total 234 (+18).
Junior Beth Felts used a torrid comeback, carding a 75 in the tournament?s final round to conclude the tournament tied for 29th. Senior Marissa Muir also had a good tournament, finishing tied for 31st after shooting a 237, just one stroke off of Felts? total. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Cats was freshman Erica Still who tied for 38th with a three-round total of 240.
Host Rollins College claimed the tournament crown, firing a three-round score of 902 (+38). Rollins? Vanessa Vela earned the individual title with a two-over-par score.
The Ross Resorts Invitational was the final tournament of the fall season for Kentucky. The Wildcats will make their spring debut in the Baja Invitational in Ensenada, Mexico Feb. 5-6, 2007.
