Linebacker Joe Schuler has decided to give up football because of recurring problems with concussions, Coach Rich Brooks said today.
?After extensive testing and consulting with the doctors, Joe has decided (to give up football),? Brooks said. ?He?s a fourth-year player (redshirt junior) and he will go through Senior Day. It didn?t make a lot of sense for him to continue. There?s no permanent damage at this point, (but) the concussions were coming easier and they were more severe. I think this is a very wise decision.
?Joe has expressed that he would like to stay connected with the program this year and possibly in the spring, getting out there and helping coach some of the younger guys and help Coach Smith (linebackers coach Chuck Smith) during practices. He is an outstanding young man and I feel very bad for him, as I do for Fatu Turituri (who had a knee injury last week), that their season has ended this way. Hopefully we can finish up this season as we would like to so that they have some reward.?
Schuler (Evansville, Ind.) made 12 tackles this season, including two for loss, as a reserve outside linebacker and as a standout performer on kick coverage. His career totals feature 29 games played, 10 starting assignments, 92 total tackles, six tackles for loss (-26 yards), one fumble caused, and one fumble recovery. He had a career-high seven tackles against Alabama in 2004 and vs. Ole Miss and Vanderbilt in 2005.
