LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Junior Beth Felts has been named the women?s golfer of the week for the period Sept. 18-25, by the Kentucky coaching staff.
Felts tied for the team finish as she placed 27th in the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup hosted by Louisville, Sept. 18-19. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native finished with a 17-over-par 233 to tie with Katie Johnson for the best finish of the week.
What is most impressive about Felts? effort was her turnaround performance from the first and second rounds, while playing with the 24-hour flu. Felts opened tournament play with a 13-over-par 85. In the tournament?s first day the golfers play 36 holes, so Felts? rebound was that much more honorable.
In the day?s second round of 18, the junior carded the first under-par round of any Wildcat golfer this season, shooting a one-under 71. Her astounding 14-stroke difference between the two rounds was perhaps the most impressive statistic for the tournament.
However, her coach Stephanie Barker was even more pleased with Felt?s final round in which she fired a 77 while being under the weather.
?Beth had an incredible tournament,? said Barker. ?Obviously, the 14-stroke difference is amazing, but I am most proud of her effort to fight through an illness and finish the way she did.?
Kentucky returns to action Sept. 30-Oct. 1 when they play host to the Wildcat Fall Invitational hosted at the University Club in Lexington.
