LEXINGTON ? Kentucky?s dominated from the opening kick to the final whistle to score a 3-0 victory over Belmont on Saturday night at the UK Soccer Complex.
The match was scoreless at the half despite the Wildcats holding a 14-3 advantage on shots. In the second frame, Kentucky turned those chances into goals en route to their third straight win at home.
With three saves, keeper Dan Williams picked up his second shutout of the year and lowered his goals-against average this year to a miniscule 0.47.
Freshman Mark Halma, who had a goal taken away against Louisville on a controversial foul call, got his first career goal when he found the back of the net with a header in the 53rd minute. Fellow freshman Barry Rice sent in a great ball from the right flank and Halma rose above the defense to snap off a header at the far post.
The Wildcats continued to pressure throughout the second half and broke though again in the 79th minute when they scored an unlikely goal. Masumi Turnbull was serving the ball into the box from 40 yards out. Jase Griffiths made a run at the ball and the keeper stayed in position to play a shot off Griffiths. However, the service was just out of his reach and the ball bounced just inside the far post for UK?s second goal. It was the second goal in as many games for Turnbull.
Riley O?Neill headed home a goal in the 87th minute for the final margin. Turnbull fed the ball in where Brad Frederick won it near the end line on the right side. He served a great ball that O?Neill used to beat goalkeeper Kyle Roelke. It was the fifth goal of the year for O?Neill and gives him 16 for his career, which is tied for sixth in school history.
The final score reflected UK?s dominance. The Wildcats outshot Belmont 28-6 and earned 11 corners to just one for the Bruins. Kentucky nearly had two more goals as Jase Griffiths and Nathan Marks each had shots cleared off the line.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Georgetown at 7 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
