BEIJING, China ? Kentucky sophomore Gordon McKenzie (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) will represent the U.S. Junior National Team in the 2006 IAAF Track and Field World Junior Championships beginning Tuesday at the Beijing Chaoyang Sports Fitness and Leisure Park in Beijing, China.
McKenzie will participate in the 100 meter with the first round scheduled for 9:05 a.m. and the semifinals taking place at 6:40 p.m. All times local (Beijing 12 hours ahead of Eastern time.) McKenzie is coming off a strong showing at the Road to Eugene ?08 meet last week at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., which served as his final tune-up for the World Junior Championships. McKenzie?s USA Red team won the 4×100 relay in 39.43 over USA Blue in 40.29. Competing against Olympic athletes and hopefuls in the 100 meter, McKenzie finished seventh with a time of 10.54.
McKenzie qualified for the World Junior Championships by finishing second in the 100 m at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Junior Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., in June. He finished second in that meet with a time of 10.30.
McKenzie posted an impressive freshman campaign at Kentucky, which was highlighted by a trip to the NCAA Championships in the 100. He recorded a personal- and team-best 10.29 (t-sixth all-time UK) at the NCAA Mideast Regionals to earn All-Region honors. He placed second in the 100 (10.30) and competed in the 200 at the Junior USA Track and Field Championships.
