SUNRIVER, Ore. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team is sixth after the first round of the 109th NCAA Division I Men?s Golf Championships at Crosswater Club in Sunriver, Ore. The Cats finished five-under par 283 for the day, while Wake Forest leads the 30-team field after shooting an 11-under par team score of 277.

UCLA is three strokes back and in second place after combining for an 8-under 280 during a windy afternoon. Washington and Oklahoma State are tied for third at 281, while Clemson finished with a 282 to round out the top five.

Freshman Andy Winings led the Wildcats and is tied for 15th after one round of play. Winings had three birdies on the day and just one bogey to finish at two-under par 70 for the day. Senior Matt Kohn eagled the par-five second hole and recorded three birdies en route to a one-under score of 71. Freshman Dan Woltman and junior Tyler Wilson also posted first-round scores of 71 to stand tied with Kohn for 28th in the individual standings. Woltman had two birdies, while Wilson led the team with five birdies in the round. Wilson had four of his five birdies on the front nine. Sophomore Brad Doster finished at four-over par 76 with two birdies on the day, including one on the final hole.

A total of 50 golfers finished in red numbers, while 12 teams came in under par. Pairings for Thursday?s second round will be the same, although the teams and individuals with morning tee times in round one will hit the links in the afternoon in round two.

The championship tournament consists of 30 teams and the nation’s top six individuals not on those teams. All 156 players will compete on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, while Saturday’s final round is cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on an advancing team. The Wildcats are set to tee off at 5:17 p.m. ET in Thursday?s second round.
