PALO ALTO, Calif. ? Kentucky junior Kim Coventry and senior Alex Hume will begin their quests for NCAA singles titles Wednesday at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. Coventry is scheduled to face Stanford?s Anne Yelsey at 7:30 p.m. EDT in the first round while Hume will take on Illinois? Kevin Anderson at 1 p.m. EDT.

Coventry, the Cats? top player at No. 49, gained an at-large selection after registering 25 victories playing in the No. 1 spot. The Melbourne, Australia, native was named second team All-SEC and recorded six wins against ranked opponents, including a victory over current No. 1 Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech on February 4.

Coventry’s first-round opponent will be Yelsey, the No. 11 player in the nation, who captured wins in 31 matches as Stanford took home its third straight NCAA women?s title.

Hume, a native of Alexandria, Va., also gained an at-large bid into the 64-man field after going 29-12. The nation?s 37th-ranked player was named first team All-SEC and knocked off nine ranked players over the course of the season, including a win over former No. 1 Lars Poerschke of Baylor. Hume will face off against No. 24 Anderson. Anderson, the older brother of UK freshman Greg Anderson, went 25-3 this season with 10 victories over players currently ranked.

Second-round singles matches will take place Thursday along with the first round of women?s doubles action. UK?s No. 27 team of Coventry and freshman Carolina Escamilla will battle New Mexico?s fourth-seeded duo of Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek for the right to move on to the second round.
