CHARDON, Ohio ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team is tied for sixth after the first round of play at the NCAA Central Region at Sand Ridge Golf Course in Chardon, Ohio. The seventh-seeded Wildcats fired a first-round score of 291 to land tied with Minnesota, Texas and Purdue for sixth.
When the first day drew to a close, top-seeded Oklahoma State held the lead at four-under par (280), just one shot clear of late-charging Northwestern, which went four-under on final hole. The only other team to shoot par or better in the 27-team field was Texas A&M at even-par (284).
Junior Tyler Wilson and freshman Dan Woltman both shot a one-over par 72 to lead the Wildcats on the opening day. Wilson had one birdie on the day, while Woltman battled back after struggling early. Woltman was five-over after six holes and birdied three straight holes to stand at two-over par at the turn. Woltman birdied the par-five 12th hole and made par the rest of the way to finish at one-over.
Andy Winings is tied for 34th overall after carding a day one 73 (+2), followed by Matt Kohn who tied for 51st with a score of 74 (+3). Brad Doster rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats with a total of 76 (+5) to tie for 74th overall.
Play continues Friday with the second round. The Cats are set to tee off at 7:47 a.m. The regional concludes on Saturday with the top 10 teams and two individuals not on those teams advancing to the NCAA Championships, May 31-June 3, at the Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore.
