UK Gymnasts freshman Heather Hite and sophomore Crissy Cannon both garnered awards at Wednesday night?s fourth annual CATSPY award held at Rupp Arena. Hite was named co-Female Rookie of the Year while Cannon earned the Female Scratch Award.
Hite, a first-year standout from Parkersburg, W. Va., made an immediate impact during her first season in Lexington. A beam and floor specialist, Hite won six meet titles on the two events and competed in every meet during the last half of the season with a stress fracture. She also owned Kentucky?s top season average on balance beam and floor exercise. The Rookie of the Year recipient of this award includes nominees from April 2005 through April 2006. The CATSPYs define a rookie as any athlete in their first year of competition at Kentucky.
Cannon, a native of Lenior City, Tenn., was the recipient of the Scratch Award, given to a non-scholarship athlete whose efforts is representative of playing for the ?love of the game.? Cannon was a key cog in the Wildcats? school record-breaking 16-win performance in ?06. She competed on bars, beam and floor, where she notched career-highs on all three.
In the four-year history of the CASTPY Awards, the UK gymnastics squad has won five awards. Former Cats Michelle Gales (Female Play of the Year) and Lindsey Cameron (Community Service) took home honors in ?05. Mindy Smith won Miss Wildcat in ?03.
