TEMPE, Ariz. — The University of Kentucky hammer throwers competed in day one action at the Baldy Castillo Invitational at host Arizona State Friday. Three Wildcats earned personal-bests, while senior Nicole Allyn hit a regional qualifying mark.
Allyn started the outdoor season with a bang, reaching a regional qualifying mark with a toss of 182-0. Allyn placed third in the event and was just shy of a personal-best (182-5, second all-time UK). Freshman Ashley Muffet added to her already impressive resume with a Kentucky freshman record and personal-best throw of 173-1 (fourth place). Muffet now owns UK freshman marks for the indoor weight throw and shot put and hammer throw. Senior Ildiko Varga placed seventh with a personal-best of 170-0 (fifth all-time UK).
On the men?s side, junior Andy Fryman was the Cats? top performer with a throw of 165-7. Fryman?s personal-best of 180-1 remains fourth all-time at Kentucky. Sophomore Alek Grietens entered the UK record books at sixth with a toss of 152-7.
