Lexington, Ky. ? Kentucky freshman Carolina Escamilla was named Southeastern Conference Women?s Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday for her efforts last weekend against LSU and Arkansas. The Medellin, Colombia, native went undefeated against the Tigers and the Razorbacks winning both of her matches in straight sets. Escamilla becomes the second Wildcat to win this prestigious award this season. Senior Danielle Petrisko was named SEC Co-Player of the Week back on Jan. 24.
Escamilla has been on a roll since conference play has started winning her first four SEC singles matches. Escamilla is currently on a five-match winning streak and has 10 victories this spring. Last week in singles action, Escamilla swept both Arkansas? Maryori Franco (6-2, 6-3) and LSU?s Camilla Caliari (6-4, 6-3). The first-year Wildcat also teamed with junior Kim Coventry to gain an 8-6 victory over the Razorbacks? Aurelija Miseviciute and Ela Kaluder.
The No. 26 Kentucky women?s tennis team (10-6, 3-1 SEC) will return to action on Fri., March 24, when it travels to Starkville, Miss., to battle Mississippi State at 4 p.m. EST.
