FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? The University of Kentucky track and field teams completed day one action at the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday. Junior Georganne Way and sophomore Lavera Morris competed in the 800, while junior Gavin Ball threw the shot put.
Way and Morris ran impressive times in the prelims, but failed to reach Saturday?s finals. Way placed fifth in her flight in a time of 2:07.48, while Morris finished fifth in her respective flight (2:08.51). Both runners enjoyed breakthrough indoor campaigns this season highlighted by Morris running the second fastest 800 (2:06.33) all-time at UK and Way right behind her in third (2:06.49). It was the first indoor championships appearance for both runners. Way and Morris and the rest of the UK squad will look to carry over their indoor success to the outdoor circuit starting next week in Tempe, Ariz. at the Baldy Castillo Invitational, March 17-18.
Ball competed in the prelims of the shot put, but fouled on all three throws. The meet marked the Monona Grove, Wis. native?s first NCAA indoor appearance. Ball entered the meet with a season-best mark of 61-1.25, good for fifth all-time at Kentucky.
Tomorrow, the Kentucky men?s 4×400 relay will take to the track. The Cats enter the event owning the fourth fastest time in the country (3:07.01). Live stats for the event will be available on ncaasports.com.
