Lexington, Ky. – The 19th-ranked Kentucky men?s tennis team defeated Toledo Sunday 6-1 to sweep a doubleheader at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. Earlier in the day, the Cats defeated No. 71 Purdue 5-2. The win upped Kentucky?s record to 4-2 on the season.
The Cats got on the board early by winning the doubles point. Freshmen Shane Collins and Kenny Hodge notched UK?s first victory by defeating Toledo?s Chris Clark and Jared Miller 8-3. Freshmen Bruno Agostinelli and Gregory Anderson won Kentucky?s second match 8-5 over the Rockets? Travis Curran and Brain Rager. The nation?s 40th-ranked doubles tandem of Nate Emge and Alex Hume rounded out the Cats? winning ways by outlasting the Rockets? Mohammed Al Nabhani and Tony Tran 8-6.
In singles competition, the Wildcats were dominant winning five of six matches. Freshman Bruno Agostinelli as well as the squad?s three seniors Nate Emge, Alex Hume and Carey Rubin each won their second match of the day in straight sets. The victory was the seventh straight for the 61st-ranked Hume.
Sophomore Marcus Sundh clinched the match for Kentucky playing in the No. 1 spot. After taking the first set 6-2 against Al Nabhani, Sundh dropped the second set 3-6. The Stockholm, Sweden, native rallied to finish off his opponent in the third 6-3.
Kentucky will return to action this Friday when they travel for the first time during dual match season to Waco, Texas to take on the 8th-ranked Baylor Bears. Fans can check ukathletics.com for a complete recap following the match.
