The Kentucky women?s basketball team is set to meet Florida for the second time this season when it plays host to the Gators on Super Bowl Sunday at noon in Memorial Coliseum. Tickets are sold out for the nationally televised game on Fox Sports Net. The game can be viewed in Lexington on FSN South, Insight cable channel 52. The game also will be broadcast live on the Big Blue Sports Radio Network with Neil Price. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free UK Hoops beach towel.
The No. 21/23 Wildcats (15-5, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) are looking to get back on the winning track after falling to No. 14 Georgia 91-57 on Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs shot an incredible 70.8 percent from the floor in the second half en route to shooting a season-best 64.2 percent for the game. Sophomore Eleia Roddy led UK with 12 points while senior Jennifer Humphrey pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Gators (16-5) are coming off a 72-61 victory over Auburn on Thursday. They are 4-4 in the SEC and tied for sixth in the league standings with Vanderbilt, sitting one-half game behind Kentucky (4-3).
?Florida is coming off a big win over Auburn and they are playing really well right now,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?They have very quick guards who are impressive shooters from three-point range. We are going to have to play smart and limit our turnovers. It will be an exciting game and we are looking forward to playing in front of our fans in this sell-out crowd.?
UK defeated then-ranked No. 24 Florida in the teams? earlier meeting this season, 80-65, on Jan. 12 in Gainesville. Jenny Pfeiffer scored a season-high 23 points and the Wildcats picked up their first victory the Gators in Gainesville since the 2000 season. Humphrey led a tenacious defensive effort for the Wildcats with a career-high 19 boards, while Roddy posted her third career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Florida holds a slight 19-16 lead all-time series, but the series is tied at eight apiece when the game is played in Lexington. UK?s last win over Florida in Lexington came in 2003, 49-47.
Pfeiffer leads UK in scoring this season, averaging 11.7 points per game. What is most impressive is that Pfeiffer has come off the bench in all 20 games. Sophomore Samantha Mahoney follows with 11.3 ppg while sophomore Sarah Elliott and freshman Carly Ormerod average 10.4 and 9.9 ppg, respectively. Humphrey is the squad’s leading rebounder with 8.9 boards per game.
Florida features an extremely balanced scoring attack as well. The Gators? three double-figure scorers are Dalila Eshe, Brittany Davis and Sha Brooks, averaging 13.3, 12.8 and 12.0 points per game, respectively.
Tickets are sold out for Sunday?s game, marking Memorial Coliseum?s first sell-out of the season. Plenty of tickets remaining for Kentucky?s two remaining home contests, Feb. 16 vs. Ole Miss in Memorial Coliseum and Feb. 26 vs. Alabama in Rupp Arena.
