LEXINGTON ? Kentucky second baseman John Shelby is considered one of the nation?s top collegiate prospects for the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft according to a recent ranking released by Baseball America.

Shelby is considered the No. 43 junior in the country after a stellar sophomore campaign that saw him lead UK in nearly every offensive category. It is the second time this preseason he has been recognized by Baseball America as he was named an All-American as well.

A junior from Lexington, Shelby batted .344 with 10 home runs and 52 RBIs last season. He also swiped 23 bases and was one of just two Southeastern Conference players with at least 10 home runs and 20 steals. The other was Eli Iorg of Tennessee, who went in the first round of the 2005 draft.

Shelby and Kentucky kick off the season on Feb. 17 in San Antonio, Texas. The home opener is slated for Feb. 28 against Evansville.
