The Wildcats (9-2) are looking to rebound from a tough loss to Louisville on Wednesday. The Cats fell to the Cards 64-55 in Rupp Arena as a season-high 10,192 fans packed the downtown venue to watch the intrastate rivals. It was the second-highest crowd to watch a women?s basketball game in Rupp Arena in school history. Junior guard Jenny Pfeiffer (North Vernon, Ind.) led the way for UK, knocking down five three-pointers to lead all scorers with 19 points. Senior forward/center Jennifer Humphrey (Memphis) grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and four blocks in the loss and sophomore center Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.) added 12 points and seven rebounds.
?We got back in practice today and worked on a lot of the things we did wrong against Louisville,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?We know we have to improve offensively because it?s going to be a tough game with Wake Forest. They are a veteran team and have all of their top scorers back from last year. It was a great game in Rupp Arena last season and I know they make it tough on us in their place.?
Saturday?s game marks the second meeting all-time between the Wildcats and Demon Deacons. Last season, Kentucky edged Wake Forest 66-61 in Rupp Arena behind 20 points and eight rebounds from Elliott in her second collegiate start.
Sophomore guard Samantha Mahoney (Detroit) leads the Wildcats in scoring with 11.2 points per game, while Pfeiffer follows with 10.6 ppg. Humphrey is the squad?s leader on the boards, averaging 8.5 rebounds per game.
Wake Forest is 6-4 on the season and is coming off a 66-57 loss to Richmond on Wednesday. The Demon Deacons return four starters, including leading scorer Cotelia Bond-Young, from last year?s 17-15 squad that advanced to the quarterfinal round of the postseason WNIT. Bond-Young, a senior guard, leads three players averaging double-figure scoring with 18.0 ppg. Senior guard/forward Liz Strunk follows with 16.4 ppg and freshman guard Deidre Naughton is chipping in 11.8 ppg
