The Kentucky women?s tennis team continued their play Friday at the ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships and the Southeastern Conference Coaches Championships.
At the Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio, juniors Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk rebounded from an opening day loss to defeat Gabriela Duch and Neyssa Etienne of South Florida, 8-6. The duo will continue on in the consolation bracket and face Northwestern?s Cristelle Grier and Alexis Prousis on Saturday.
Coventry, the native of Australia, also won her first singles match of the consolation bracket by defeating Ohio State?s Caitlin O’ Keefe in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
In Peachtree City, Ga., the rest of the women?s team continued their singles and doubles action. Senior Danielle Petrisko and junior Caroline Winebrenner recorded victories in the opening round of singles play. Petrisko defeated Mississippi State?s Renee Joseph in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, while Winebrenner swept Mississippi State?s Elna de Villiers 6-4, 6-4.
Liis Sober and Lara Maurer both dropped their opening round matches and will continue in the consolation bracket for the rest of the tournament.
In the doubles brackets, the Cats have gotten off to a rough start dropping their first four matches of the tournament.
The tournaments will continue on Saturday with Kentucky in both singles and doubles action. Fans can check ukathletics.com for recaps of both tournaments.
