LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky men?s soccer team closes out the regular season on Sunday when it travels to top-ranked Akron for a 1 p.m. showdown at Lee Jackson Field.
The Wildcats (6-6-5) are coming off a scoreless draw against Marshall on Friday that clinched a spot in the Conference USA Tournament. Meanwhile, the Zips remained the nation?s lone unbeaten team with a 1-0 overtime win over Michigan on Friday.
?Akron has obviously proven they deserve to be ranked No. 1 in the country right now,? Kentucky head coach Ian Collins said. ?I don?t care who you play, it?s tough to go through a whole schedule without a loss in the game of soccer.?
The two teams were Mid-American Conference rivals for the previous decade before Kentucky jumped to C-USA. In the league?s 10 years from 1995-2004, one of the two schools won the conference championship nine times.
The Wildcats won the title four of their final five years in the league with the Zips taking home the other title in that span. Akron has already won the 2005 MAC championship.
In a tight rivalry that dates back to the 1995 season, the Zips hold a slight 6-4-2 advantage, including a 4-0-1 mark at home. However, UK is 3-1-1 in the series since 2001.
?There?s definitely a history with this rivalry and you can throw the records out the window,? Collins said. ?Both teams know each other extremely well and know what to expect from each other. There won?t be any surprises, so we?ll just go out and play and see what happens.?
Ross McKenzie and Sinisa Ubiparipovic have 15 and 12 goals, respectively, to lead the way for Akron, which has outscored opponents 53-7 this year.
