LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky rifle team fired its best score in two years to secure an easy 4679-4604 victory over Memphis on Monday at Buell Armory.
The win came on the heels of a season-opening loss to defending national champion Army in which the Wildcats posted a 4638.
?We came back very well today,? Kentucky head coach Harry Mullins said. ?After a tough loss to Army, we could have laid down, but we were focused and ready to go.?
Freshman Jason Dardas led the way for UK, scoring 592 in smallbore and 588 in air rifle. His smallbore score helped Kentucky to a 2344 team score as all four shooters recorded at least a 580.
?When Jason is on, he?s on,? Mullins said. ?He is going to be a guy we count on all year, but he?s has the ability to shoot numbers like that every time he?s out there.?
Junior Amy Sowash had the team?s high score in air rifle with a 589. She was on pace to score even better before shooting a 95 in the final round. Her score paved the way for a team total of 2335 in the event. That number could have been higher, but Ray Geyer, the team?s top shooter a year ago, fired a 575.
?I was pleased with our air gun score, but I think it can be better,? Mullins said. ?Ray shot a score that is not typical of him and we know he?ll put up better numbers. Amy was tremendous. I think she realized how good she was shooting going into that last round and it made her nervous, but it was still an unbelievable performance.?
The Wildcats team scores in each events were the highest for them since the current format took over last season.
Kentucky returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Ohio State. Last year, UK beat the Buckeyes 4627-4423 in Lexington.
