The defending Southeastern Conference regular-season champion Kentucky women?s tennis team will host its first home event of the season, the Kentucky Fall Invitational, beginning Friday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. The three-day event will consist of 12 teams competing in four singles flights and two doubles flights.
The field for this year?s tournament will be strong with fellow SEC competitor Auburn, in-state rivals Louisville and Eastern Kentucky, as well as the Big Ten?s Illinois, Ohio State, and Purdue traveling to Lexington.
?This tournament is a great opportunity to increase our level of play for the rest of the fall season and into the spring,? head coach Carlos Drada said.
Leading the Wildcats into their second tournament of the fall will be juniors Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk, who both won singles flights last year in this tournament.
The 15th-ranked Coventry will be looking to build on the momentum she gained at the St. Mary?s Classic two weeks ago. The Melbourne, Australia, native dropped her opening match of the season, but rallied to take two straight to win the Singles Flight 1 consolation bracket in Knoxville, Tenn.
Schwenk, who is the 118th-ranked singles player in the country, will team with Coventry in doubles competition. The duo is ranked ninth in the preseason poll.
Joining Coventry and Schwenk in action this weekend will be juniors Lara Maurer, Liis Sober and Caroline Winebrenner, along with senior Danielle Petrisko.
The Kentucky Fall Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday. Fans can check ukathletics.com for tournament results, updated draws, and complete recaps of the day?s matches throughout the weekend.
