Kentucky men?s tennis senior Alex Hume fell in three sets to Luigi D?Agord of Miami, Fla., in the semifinals of the Flight A Singles bracket to conclude UK?s weekend at the Virginia Fall Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The semifinals of the consolation brackets for Bruno Agostinelli, Carey Rubin and Marcus Sundh were all cancelled due to rain on Sunday.
The 68th-ranked Hume won the opening set against the nation?s 26th-ranked D?Agord 6-4, before dropping the next two, 6-3, 6-2, to lose the match. Overall, Hume won three matches this weekend, with two of those wins coming against the highly ranked D?Agord and the 16th-ranked Rylan Rizza of Virginia. Sunday?s loss stopped Hume?s season-best six-match winning streak.
?Alex Hume had a really good weekend beating two players in the top-100 in the nation,? head coach Dennis Emery said. ?Today he started off really strong winning the first set and had a chance to take charge in the second set before his opponent stepped up.?
For freshmen Agostinelli and Sundh, as well as senior Rubin, the rain that fell all weekend in Charlottesville cut short their promising run in their respective consolation backdraws. Both Agostinelli and Sundh notched two victories on Saturday, while Sundh, who received a first round bye, won his only match of the day.
The men?s tennis team takes a weekend off before returning to the courts on Wednesday Oct. 5 at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
