VERSAILLES, Ky. ? Senior Allison Grace took home the top spot and five of her teammates placed in the top seven at the Woodford Trials Friday as the University of Kentucky’s cross country teams opened the 2005 campaign. The women?s team won all three dual matchups, while the men came away with one victory.

As a team, the Wildcat women swept the field and defeated Eastern Kentucky (17-42), Marshall (15-49) and Louisville (15-49).

Grace paced the field on the 2-mile course, finishing first at the Woodford Trials for the second consecutive season. Tailing Grace (11:31) was fellow teammates sophomore Lilliane Sparkes (second, 11:34) and sophomore Andrea Brown (third, 12:06).

Junior Georganne Way (12:07), sophomore Lavera Morris (12:10) and freshman Andrea Halasek (12:12) finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Other finishers for UK included freshmen Andrea Taylor Miller (15th, 12:37) and Whitney Popp (27th, 13:24).

On the men?s side, junior John Richardson (third, 15:46) came across the finish line first for the Cats on the 5K course. Richardson ran the race unattached.

Sophomore Andre Silva came close to matching last season?s ninth place finish, finishing tenth with a time of 16:35.

Senior Chris Millsor finished 14th, followed by freshman Bruce Hordusky (19th), junior Jonathan Thomas (20th), senior Andrew Thompson (24th), junior Nick Reeves (25th) and sophomore Stephen Smith (27th).

Newcomers Ryan Finn (Ajax, Ontario) and Tim Cunningham (Rutland, Mass.) did not compete in the race due to mild injuries, but are both expected to contribute to this season?s squad.

In the team scoring, the Cats were defeated by EKU (17-42) and Louisville (16-47) but pulled out the win against Marshall (18-44).

Jacob Korir of EKU came away with the individual title in a brisk 14:58, followed by Louisville?s Wesley Korir (15:24) and UK?s Richardson.

Looking ahead, both UK teams head to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational, Sept. 30.
