The Kentucky football team went through a situational scrimmage as part of a two and one-half hour practice Saturday morning at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Wildcats worked in all phases of the kicking game, along with goal-line and two-minute drills. The only full-contact portion of the practice was the goal-line drill. The remainder of the practice was done in a hit and release style, known commonly as thud.

Here are some observations from Coach Rich Brooks following the practice:

“We had a good practice today. I was pleased with the first part but not at the end as we didn’t execute on offense during the two-minute drill. The offense looked really good at times. The defense was flying around, got some takeaways and made some nice plays.”

“Both units played with great enthusiasm for most of the practice. The defense kept it going although the offense had a little less enthusiasm at the end.”

“We’ve made some progress as a team. We go forward and then a little back; that happens with just about any team, not just a young team.”

Brooks noted that three players were doubtful to play against Louisville on Sept. 4, defensive tackle Jason Leger (knee), cornerback Jarrell Williams (groin), and offensive guard Micah Jones (knee). Leger’s situation, along with the absence of Ricky Abren (out indefinitely with a broken wrist), leaves the Wildcats with true freshmen Myron Pryor and Ventrell Jenkins as the top reserves at defensive tackle. Another true freshman, David Jones, will be in Williams’ place as a backup cornerback behind Bo Smith. Sophomore Patrick Daly and true freshman Garry Williams are battling for Jones’ backup role at right guard behind Trai Williams.

“From now, we will focus 100 percent on Louisville. To this point, we’ve done it sporadically.”
