The 14th season of Kentucky women?s soccer kicks off Friday night when the Wildcats play host to Michigan State. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats and Spartans faced off last season in East Lansing with MSU taking that match by a finals core of 5-1. This week?s match is also the season opener for MSU who defeated Eastern Michigan, 2-0, in an exhibition last week.
UK defeated Louisville last week, Aug. 18, by a score of 2-0 in its lone exhibition contest of the season at Cardinal Park.
The Wildcats outshot the Cardinals, 16-9, including an 11-2 margin in the first half. Freshman Rachel Ulrich and junior transfer Betsy Holbrook recorded the two goals for the Cats, while freshman Nicola Holdsworth was credited with an assist on the Ulrich goal.
The 2005 squad welcomes 13 newcomers this season and boasts 14 returnees from last year?s squad that earned a conference record 12th consecutive berth in the SEC tournament. Leading the way for the Cats are senior Jen Weakley and sophomore Callie Lanphier who each led the Wildcats in 2004 with four goals apiece.
?This is our first true test with a young team and we?re looking forward to kicking the season off after a long preseason,? said head coach Warren Lipka who enters his 14th season at the helm. ?Everyone is excited for Friday night.?
Friday night is ?Camper Reunion Night? at the UK Soccer Complex with free admission to those who attended the UK soccer camps. Admission for parents of campers is $2.
