DES MOINES, Iowa ? Kentucky goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum leads his Des Moines Menace team of the Premier Development League into the national championship game this Saturday at El Paso, Texas.
The PDL National Championship game takes place on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET on the home field of the El Paso Patriots. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Soccer Channel, which is cable channel 105 in the Lexington area. Des Moines and El Paso are the only teams still standing in the 54-team league.
The Menace rallied for a 2-1 win over the Orange County Blue Star to reach the championship. Gruenebaum made eight saves in the contest to lead his squad over the PDL regular-season champions. Prior to facing Des Moines, Orange County had posted a 17-1 record on the season.
The Patriots ousted the Richmond Kickers, 4-3, in their semifinal.
Gruenebaum has been a staple in goal all year for the Menace, which are enjoying the best season in the club?s history. The team has reached the PDL national championship game for the first time ever.
Des Moines made headlines earlier this summer by reaching the final 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, where it earned a date with the Kansas City Wizards of the MLS.
