The University of Kentucky?s Cale Barr defeated former Wildcat Grover Justice on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff at Kearney Hill Links in Lexington to win the Fifth Third Bank/Callaway Golf Kentucky Open yesterday, Aug. 4.

Barr, a junior this fall at UK, won it with a five-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole after Justice missed a 15-foot birdie try. It was the 100th junior golf tournament title for the Versailles native.

Barr and Justice both birdied the first playoff hole (the par-5 18th) before Barr prevailed.

Barr, meanwhile, will settle for winning the biggest golf title in Kentucky, a title won by Byron Nelson, Frank Beard, Gay Brewer, Larry Gilbert and Jodie Mudd.

Former UK golfer John Holmes won the Open in 2003 and 2004. He didn’t play this year because he is preparing for next week’s Walker Cup competition.

Barr showed Holmes-like distance off the tee at times yesterday on the hard Kearney fairways. His tee shot at the 14th hole measured 370 yards, and he cranked one 360 yards at the 18th.
