SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? UK senior Gennessa Guzman and junior Ildiko Varga competed in the women?s discus qualifying round at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., Wednesday. The pair, performing in the opening event that was plagued by cloudy skies and a steady rain, did not make the top-12 that will compete in Friday?s final.

Varga, a Heves, Hungary native, finished her season with a 14th-place toss of 161-08, while Guzman ended her career in her home state with a heave of 151-02. Guzman took 23rd in her first appearance at the championships. She leaves Kentucky as the school record holder in the hammer throw and the weight throw.

?I had a fulfilling career and I learned a lot about myself,? said Guzman. ?It?s sad that my career is over, but I couldn?t have asked for more. I was blessed with amazing teammates and a very supportive coaching staff.?

Senior Jeff Chakouian and sophomore Andy Fryman will represent UK in the men?s shot put qualifying round, which is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. EDT tonight.
