LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The field is set for the NCAA Track & Field Championships, as four University of Kentucky field athletes will represent the Cats in three events. Michael Mason and Gennessa Guzman received nods from the NCAA committee to compete at nationals. The duo will join Jeff Chakouian and Ildiko Varga, who automatically qualified for nationals at the Mideast Regional on May 27-28.
A freshman, Mason qualified for nationals in the high jump with his season-best leap of 7-2 ? from the SEC Championships. The Nanoose Bay, B.C., native, is ranked 11th heading into the championships and is one of six freshmen seeking their first-ever NCAA title.
Guzman looks to test the championship waters after qualifying for nationals with a career-best toss of 167-11 at the Mideast Regional. Ranked 22nd in the women?s discus field, Guzman will make her inaugural appearance at nationals.
Senior Jeff Chakouian, who automatically qualified for the championships with his runner-up toss of 66-2 ?, is ranked second in the nation. He will battle for the third meet in a row with Auburn?s Edis Elkasevic for NCAA Championship title bragging rights.
Varga also automatically qualified for nationals with her finish at the Mideast Regional. The junior sits 15th in the women?s discus field and looks to improve on her seventh-place finish at nationals last year.
The NCAA Championships get underway Wednesday, June 8, at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. Competition will run through Saturday, June 11.
