LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky baseball team closes out the 2005 season this weekend with a three-game set at No. 23 South Carolina beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia, S.C.
The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Friday?s game can be heard on WXRA 1580-AM while the final two games of the weekend will be broadcast on WLXO 96.1-FM. All three games can heard online at the official website for Kentucky athletics, www.UKathletics.com.
The Wildcats will be looking to win a series over the Gamecocks for the second straight year. Last season, Kentucky took two of three in Lexington, including a complete-game victory by Kalen Gibson that earned the Slaughters, Ky., native Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors.
Gibson (4-3, 5.84), a right-hander takes the mound for the Wildcats Friday against South Carolina senior right-hander Aaron Rawl (8-5, 2.89), who got the Gamecocks lone win in the series last year.
Junior lefty Aaron Tennyson (6-1, 4.26) gets the nod for Kentucky on Saturday while freshman southpaw Andrew Albers (4-5, 5.04) will start Sunday. The Wildcats are 6-0 in conference play when Tennyson starts.
For South Carolina, senior Zac McCamie (8-3, 2.94) will try to put an end to Tennyson?s success with a Saturday start. Sophomore left-hander Arik Hempy (1-0, 2.20) squares off against Albers.
Kentucky, which clinched a winning season with a win over Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, stands at 29-24 overall and 7-19 in the league. The Wildcats need one win over the weekend to secure their first 30-win season in five year and second since 1997.
Meanwhile, South Carolina is 34-19 overall and 13-14 in the conference. The Gamecocks are among six teams fighting for the final three spots in the SEC Tournament next week at Birmingham, Ala. The tournament takes the league?s top eight seeds.
Kentucky has won three of the last five series on the road against South Carolina.
