The University of Kentucky women?s basketball team signed Oreonna (pronounced or-E-on-na) Taylor to a national letter-of-intent, Coach Mickie DeMoss has announced. Taylor is a 5-6 point guard from Stockbridge High School in Stockbridge, Ga.
Taylor, originally of Rochester, N.Y., played three seasons at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School in Rochester before moving to Stockbridge in October of 2004. In just one year with the Lady Tigers, Taylor made a name for herself as the 2005 Henry County Player of Year after guiding Stockbridge to a 22-7 record and its first state tournament appearance in eight years.
She also was named to the first-team All-Southern Crescent Girls Basketball squad for Clayton, Henry, and Fayette counties and was selected Henry County?s Player of the Week on several occasions.
Despite missing the first five games of the season due to her move from New York to Georgia, Taylor averaged a team-high 17.0 points per game, shooting 38.6 percent from the floor, including 37.8 percent (37-of-98) from beyond the arc. She also grabbed 4.0 steals, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game during her senior campaign.
?We are really excited to have her on board,? DeMoss said. ?She is a very athletic point guard who plays extremely hard and brings a lot to the table. She can shoot the ?three? and breaks down the defense. She also distributes the ball well. She is a very good student and a great competitor.?
The four-sport standout also excelled in tennis, softball and lacrosse during her prep career.
Taylor chose Kentucky over South Carolina and UT-Chattanooga.
She joins Shana Andrus, Kasi Galloway, Jenne Jackson and Carly Ormerod in the 2005 recruiting class.
