The University of Kentucky softball team defeated Louisville today, Apr. 14, in comeback fashion, downing the Cardinals, 3-2, to earn its second straight win. UK improves to 19-32 on the year, while U of L falls to 26-13 with the loss.
The Wildcats fell behind early as U of L plated two runs in the fifth on three hits, including an RBI double by the third baseman Lacy Wood.
Sophomore second baseman Amber Janneck belted her team-leading seventh homerun of the season in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at two. Brooke Marnitz had singled to left to lead off the inning and scored on the Janneck bomb. The Wildcats took the lead when Meghan Cooper walked, moved to third on a single by Jessica Nance and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Freshman Samantha Allen stranded a pair of baserunners in the top of the seventh as UK held on for the one-run win. Allen went to 11-13 on the year as she didn?t allow a run and gave up just two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Janneck, who is already the all-time homerun leader at Kentucky, went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Cooper doubled, scored a run and tossed two scoreless innings for the Cats.
Despite committing a pair of errors in the field, the Wildcat defense turned it?s league-leading 20th double play of the season.
The Wildcats will enjoy an off-weekend before returning to action at Arkansas, Apr. 23-25, for a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
