LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Kentucky track and field squads split forces, traveling to the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and to the 47th Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. A handful of 800 meter runners and Kentucky sprinters will compete at Sun Angel Stadium on Saturday, while the rest of the squad will perform at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium Friday through Sunday.
The Sun Angel Classic begins on Saturday at 11 a.m. EDT time with the women?s hammer throw and concludes with the men?s 4×400-meter relay at midnight EDT.
Kentucky will compete is the men?s 1,500-meter run beginning at 6:05 p.m. EDT on Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays. UK?s Friday?s festivities wrap up with the women?s 800-meter run at 10:30 p.m. EDT.
On Saturday, Kentucky opens with the women?s discus at 1:30 p.m. EDT and concludes the day?s events with the men?s hammer throw at 5 p.m. EDT. The Wildcats begin competing Sunday with the men?s shot put at 2:30 p.m. EDT and wrap up the meet with the men?s high jump at 6 p.m. EDT.
At the Gatorade Classic last week in Knoxville, Tenn., the Wildcats tallied ten regional qualifying marks, eight of those coming from the men?s squad. Representing the men?s squad was senior Jeff Chakouian was honored as SEC Field Event Athlete of the Week for his heave of 66-02 ? in the men?s shot put at the Gatorade Classic. It was his second honor of the season and the third time during his collegiate career.
Chakouian?s toss last weekend at the Gatorade Classic surpassed all NCAA Division I shot put competitors according to the Track Wire Dandy Dozen ranking. That mark is also almost four feet further than the nearest SEC competitor and is less than one inch away from his own school record of 66-03 set last year.
