LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky baseball team goes for a season sweep of Louisville on Wednesday when it welcomes the Cardinals to Cliff Hagan Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. showdown.
The Wildcats held off Louisville 12-11 earlier in the year at Old Cardinal Stadium in an offensive slugfest. The two teams combined for 31 hits, including 17 that went for extra-bases. All nine Kentucky starters recorded a hit and seven had two or more in the game.
?Both teams are very good offensively and it showed in our last game,? said Kentucky head coach John Cohen. ?I thought we did a great job getting ahead early, but we didn?t keep the pressure on them and let them back in the game. We can?t do that this time.?
Kentucky sophomore John Shelby led the way with three hits, including a tape-measure home run to deep center. He fell just a double shy of the cycle. In the past month ? a span of 17 games ? Shelby has been an offensive juggernaut. He has seven home runs and 26 RBIs while batting .406.
In his last 11 outings, Shelby has eight multi-hit and seven multi-RBI performances. Setting the table for Shelby has been Antone DeJesus and Shaun Lehmann, who have combined to score 30 runs in the last 10 games. Each is hitting over .400 and have helped the Wildcats to six games of nine runs or more in that span.
Since the Kentucky win earlier this year, the Wildcats have posted a 2-5 record in seven games, all coming against ranked foes. This past weekend, Kentucky dropped two of three to No. 25 Tennessee.
Meanwhile Louisville has gone 3-4. The Cardinals, who have series wins over No. 1 Tulane and No. 12 Georgia this year, took two of three from Houston over the weekend.
?Louisville has a tremendous club,? Cohen said. ?They?ve shown the ability to play with and beat the best teams in the country on a consistent basis. But I like the way our team has been playing lately. Our young players are really coming around and I think they will be fired up to face a good Louisville team.?
Last year, the Cardinals won in Lexington after dropping the first game of the year between the two at home.
