Junior Meghan Cooper tossed her third complete game shutout of the season today, Apr. 6, as the Kentucky softball team blanked Eastern Kentucky, 2-0, in Lexington. The Wildcats improve to 16-29 on the year, while the Colonels fall to 13-17.
Cooper (6-13) earned her sixth win of the year after allowing just six hits over the full 7.0 innings. She walked one and struck out a batter. Cooper gave up just one extra-base hit in the second and stranded six Colonels on the base paths en route to the win.
Senior Jessica Nance belted her second homerun of the season in the sixth. The solo shot came with two outs and sailed over the left field fence to put the Cats on top 2-0.
UK had also scored in the fifth when Megan Glenn led off with a single. Pinch runner Kristen Cochran moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Lori Melchi and advanced to third on a single by Alli Eckman. Brooke Marnitz followed with the third single of the inning to score Cochran from third for the first run of the contest.
?This was a good win for us and it?s great to have this momentum going into the weekend at LSU,? said head coach Eileen Schmidt.
Nance finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Ashley Fertic added her third double of the year, while Marnitz, Eckman, Glenn each collected a hit.
The Wildcats return to Southeastern Conference action this weekend, Apr. 9-10, when they travel to Baton Rouge to take on Louisiana State.
