LEXINGTON ? With spring practice barely underway, the Kentucky soccer team showed it was in midseason form with a 5-0 rout of Erin Mills, a Canadian traveling squad, on March 10.
The game was the first of the spring for the Wildcats, which won their fourth Mid-American Conference Championship in five years a season ago. Kentucky also played without standouts Michael D?Agostino and Riley O?Neill, who are each on the U-20 Canadian National Team this spring.
?This was our first game of the Spring and the players adjusted well,? Kentucky head coach Ian Collins said. ?Due to injuries and International Duty we have a reduced number of players available and this game allowed a some players to see their first game action for UK including both keepers.?
First-team all-conference performer Thomas Senecal and Matt Baum led the way with two goals each while Chris Okamura tallied one. Kentucky led 3-0 at the half and cruised to the victory.
Brannan Sapp and Grant Ward, both redshirt freshmen who saw no action in goal a year ago, combined for the shutout.
?We dominated in all phases of the game against a team that had a number of talented individuals and who competed very hard,? Collins said.. ?We will look to build upon this for the rest of the Spring and keep moving forward.?
Kentucky continues workouts this spring in preparations for the 2005 season. This year, the Wildcats make the jump to Conference USA, which features eight teams that held a top 25 ranking during the 2004 campaign.
