Kentucky senior All-American Jesse Witten rebounded from a one-set deficit and saved three match points to preserve a 4-3 Wildcat victory over Arkansas Sunday at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center in Fayetteville.
With the score knotted at three, Witten swept a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set against the Razorbacks? 57th-ranked Rohan Gajjar. Witten took a 5-3 lead in the final set before Gajjar saved four match points and took three-consecutive games to assume a 6-5 lead. Witten saved three Arkansas match points to send the final set to another tiebreaker. Gajjar took a 5-3 lead in the tiebreak, but Witten captured the final four points to give Kentucky its conference victory of the season.
Kentucky started the match by taking the doubles point. Arkansas claimed the first doubles win at the No. 2 position, but UK?s Alex Hume and Nate Emge answered with an 8-5 win at the No. 3 position. Witten and senior Tigran Martirosyan clinched the point at first doubles, defeating Adrians Zguns and Gajjar by an 8-5 count.
Martirosyan extended the Wildcat lead to 2-0 with an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Arkansas? Imraan Ismail. The Razorbacks evened the tally at two with singles victories from Zguns and Matt Roberts. Hume put the Cats back on top with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jimmy Khougassian. Arkansas? Michael Jung knotted the score at three with a three-set win over UK?s Marcus Sundh at the sixth slot before Witten closed out the Kentucky win over an hour later.
UK returns home next weekend to meet Auburn and Alabama at the Boone Tennis Complex.
