Kentucky landed one finals berth and barely missed on another after Thursday?s preliminary round at the NCAA Men?s Swimming and Diving Championships in Minnesota?s University Aquatic Center.
Kentucky?s 200-freestyle relay quartet of seniors Tim Patrick and Clay Gasparovich and juniors Daniel Farnham and Steven Manley placed third in the preliminary round by rewriting their school record with a time of 1:17.48, beating their previous mark by 77 one-hundredths of a second. The team entered the preliminaries with the fifth seed and finished behind only California and Auburn for the top spot.
Patrick swam a school-record time of 19.45 in the 50 freestyle, which tied him for eight place. Patrick was forced to compete in a tiebreaker against California?s Rolandas Gimbutis, which Gimbutis won to capture the final spot in the final. Patrick will join Farnham, who placed 14th in 19.65, in the consolation final. Gasparovich took 43rd in 20.22.
Kentucky?s 400-medley relay team entered the preliminary round with the ninth seed but was disqualified in the final leg. Barring disqualifications in tonight?s finals, Kentucky is assured of a first-team All-America finish in the 200-freestyle relay, as well as two honorable mention All-America honors in the 50 freestyle.
