The Kentucky softball team will host a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 23, when it welcomes Marshall to Lexington. Game times for the twinbill are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the UK Softball Complex.
The Wildcats are currently 12-22 on the year and 1-8 in the Southeastern Conference after dropping their last eight games. The Herd is 14-9 overall and had won four straight, capped by a 7-4 win over Notre Dame, before falling 14-7 to Ohio State in their last outing.
This marks the sixth meeting between the Wildcats and Thundering Herd. UK leads 3-2 in the all-time series despite losing the last meeting on Feb. 23, 2001. Marshall won that contest by a final score of 10-5 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
?Mid-week games are a chance to keep your team on schedule. Obviously, we have played some tough SEC competition and it does not get any easier this weekend against Mississippi State, but we need to find our rhythm,? said first-year head coach Eileen Schmidt. ?Marshall is a tough midweek game. They are a quality team with a big win over Notre Dame. This is an opportunity to get playing time for players that have not seen the field much. As good as Marshall is, we will not be falling off that SEC level of competition.
?We have been playing great ball up until the fifth inning,? added Schmidt. ?We have got to learn, when we have a team on the ropes that we need to stay on them and not let them off the hook. Instead of getting comfortable, we will learn to keep the pressure on and finish.?
