The Kentucky softball team dropped a Southeastern Conference doubleheader to No. 13 Georgia today, Mar. 15, at the UK Softball Complex. Georgia (21-7, 5-0 SEC) took the opening game by a score of 1-0 and then topped the Wildcats (12-18, 1-4 SEC) by a final score of 5-1 in the nightcap.
Pitching was the name of both games today as UGA?s Michelle Green (9-2) tossed a one-hit shutout in game one. Green walked one and struck out 14 on the day. Kentucky pitcher Samantha Allen also went the distance and allowed just one earned run on five hits. She struck out five and walked three to fall to 9-7 on the year.
First baseman Megan Glenn was the only baserunner for UK against Green. She broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff double to center in the fifth inning and reached base again in the seventh as she drew a two-out walk.
In the second game of the twinbill, both pitchers took one-hit shutouts into the sixth inning. UK?s Meghan Cooper had walked two and allowed just a single before Megan McAllister homered in the sixth to give UGA a 3-0 lead. A solo homer by Ashley Godfrey made it 4-0 as Cooper was lifted for Amy Kendall.
The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh on an RBI single to take a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats? career homerun leader, Amber Janneck, broke up the shutout as she sent a Kasi Carroll pitch over the right field wall for a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Janneck leads the team with six longballs and is the all-time career leader with 18 homers. That was all the Cats would manage as Carroll got Amber Nix, who had the only other hit for the Wildcats, to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Cooper (3-9) took the loss for UK after giving up four runs on four hits in 5.1 innings of work.
The Cats and Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, Mar. 16, for the third and final game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the UK Softball Complex.
