The Kentucky Wildcat softball team prepares to hit the road for the fourth straight weekend as they travel to the Frost Cutlery Invitational, Feb. 25-27, in Chattanooga, Tenn. UK will play six games at the UT-Chattanooga tournament over a three-day span.
UK won a 6-4 extra-inning affair in its last outing against Minnesota on Feb. 20 in Houston, Texas, to move to 2-13 on the year.
Kentucky will face Tennessee Tech (4-5) and first-year head coach Eileen Schmidt?s alma mater, Virginia (4-5), in the opening day of the tournament. The Cats and Golden Eagles face off at 10 AM, followed by a 12:45 PM contest against the Cavaliers. UK and TTU are tied 1-1 all-time, while this marks the first meeting between UK and Virginia.
Play continues Saturday when the Cats face Purdue (6-3) at 4:45 PM and Kent State (3-0) at 7 PM. UK leads 2-0 over the Boilermakers and 3-2 over KSU in the all-time series.
UK wraps up play on Sunday with a 10 AM showdown with Bowling Green who opens play at the Tennessee tournament. The Cats have won the only previous meeting against the Falcons. In their final game, the Cats face tourney host, UTC at 2:30 PM. The Mocs are 4-6 on the year and hold a 5-1 advantage all-time when facing the Cats.
UK has played in Chattanooga 17 times and is 7-10 all-time in the city. The Wildcats last played in Chattanooga on Mar. 10, 2002, going 1-1 with a win over Ohio and a loss to Kent State.
?This is a good weekend to build on Sunday?s win against Minnesota,? said Schmidt. ?It?s going to be tough because we have some injuries on our team right now. As a coach, you never want injuries, but this team will continue to deal with the obstacles and get stronger.?
