LEXINGTON – No. 7 Kentucky completed a weekend sweep of Big-Ten opponents Sunday with a 6-1 victory over No. 29 Indiana at UK?s Boone Indoor Tennis Center.
UK?s Lara Maurer and Emily Foster opened doubles play with an 8-2 win at No. 3 over Cecile Perton and Dora Vastag, and Kentucky?s Sarah Foster and Aibika Kalsarieva clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 first-doubles win over Sarah Batty and Kara Zeder. Sophomores Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk added an 8-5 win at the third position.
The outcome of the match remained undetermined for quite some time, as three of the first four singles matches went to third sets. Schwenk rallied from a one-set deficit to take the second set, 7-5 before putting away Brianna Williams in the final set, 6-1. Sarah Foster dropped her first set but won 12 of her final 13 games over IU?s Batty to increase the Kentucky lead to 3-0. Kalsarieva clinched the match for the Cats at No. 1, defeating IU?s Vastag, 6-3, 6-1.
At the fourth singles slot, Coventry fought through an illness to defeat Indiana?s Laura McGaffigan, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Maurer rounded out the scoring for Kentucky with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dominika Walterova.
Kentucky improves to 9-3 on the season and 3-0 against Big-Ten opponents. Kentucky owns a 16-13 advantage in its series with the Hoosiers. UK hits the road next weekend to meet two more Big-Ten foes, Michigan and Ohio State.
