LEXINGTON, Ky.? The University of Kentucky track and field squads opened their 2005 seasons on a high note Friday evening with four events finishing in the top-10 on the first day of the Kentucky Invitational in Nutter Field House.
Senior Gennessa Guzman had an impressive showing to start the season by recording a new school record in the weight throw with a toss of 61-09.75, topping her previous personal-best of 60-11.25. Guzman?s throw was also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
The Cats also were led by a strong underclass group. Freshman Michael Mason, in his collegiate debut, recorded a third-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6-10.75. That leap earned Mason a freshman school record. Sophomore Andy Fryman finished 10th in the weight throw with a toss of 53-10.25.
The men?s distance squad captured the 4 x 800-meter title (7:42.82), led by junior Gabe McClaren, who ran a personal-best leg of 1:51.00.
The University of Michigan women?s 4 x 800-meter relay team set a Nutter Field House record time of 8:47.75 to take the event.
Day two of the Kentucky Invitational kicks off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Nutter Field House.
