KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? Kentucky allowed an own goal in the 75th minute that lifted Western Michigan to a 1-0 win in the Mid-American Conference tournament on Sunday at the WMU Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats, seeded first after winning the regular-season championship, fell in the semifinals for the third straight year. Kentucky (11-5-3) must now wait until Monday, Nov. 15 to learn its fate from the NCAA Tournament selection committee.
The loss is the first for the Wildcats in six outings. Meanwhile, Western Michigan extended its unbeaten run to 11 games. The Broncos advance to next weekend?s championship game where they meet either Akron or Buffalo.
In a game played mostly in the middle third, Kentucky owned the overall shot advantage, 9-7, but was only able to fire on goal once. The Wildcats produced a late flurry in an attempt to score the equalizer, but fell short.
On the Bronco goal, Kentucky goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum came 10 yards off the line to play the ball. Before he was able to corral it a Wildcat defender made an unsuccessful attempt to win the ball and it trickled past Gruenebaum and in for the game?s lone goal.
Earlier in the year, Kentucky scored an easy 3-0 road win over Western Michigan. The Wildcats had won the past 12 meetings in the series prior to Sunday.
